Q: Does anyone know if the seat On a Chevrolet El Camino can be moved forward?
I am planning to buy an el camino, but the only time I drove one i had trouble reaching the pedals ( im 5′3), so i just want to know if the seat(s) can be moved closer so i can reach the pedals more comfortably.

A: Yes! Ofcourse they can.

Q: Is the Chevrolet El Camino a practical car to drive?
I’ve talked to a few of my friends about the car but they said that it wasn’t really that popular and didn’t sell to well. I was just wondering why and the mpg the car.

A: The El Camino was built in the days when GM cars were very dependable and inexpensive to maintain. The fuel economy isn’t great, but they are holding their value very well.

It wasn’t very popular because Camaro, Monte Carlo, and Malibu/Chevelle were all being produced at the same time.

Q: Is the Chevrolet El Camino considered a sports car or pick-up?
I’m wondering whether my insurance will see this as a sports car a jack up my insurance rate. I have State Farm.

A: Had one (insd w/SF) It’s a pick-up

Q: What is the gross vehicle weight of a 1972 Chevrolet El Camino SS with a 350 crate engine?
Me and my brother are trying to fiure out how much his truck weights and were getting small gross vehicle weights like 4200LBS which is impossible because that means it weighs less than a mustang or like a g35 coupe? So anyone who really knows this info please help us out because his car feels like it weighs a lot more than my mustang but yet it says that its like 400-500 pounds LIGHTER!!!

A: The 1972 weighs in at about 3300 pounds but the 1973 is 3600 pounds.

Q: Chevrolet El Camino for a new driver?
I am a new driver and I was wondering if getting a Chevy El Camino would be a good idea. I do not want to get a new car, but I don’t want to be spending alot of money fixing a used car. Are El Caminos good cars that will last or do they usually break down?

A: As someone who owns a ‘78 El Camino as a daily driver, this question is appropriate! I’ll try and give you the best advice I can. Even with a newer car around 2000, you can still have problems. The key is finding an El Camino in nice mechanical shape, cause there are plenty of abused ones out there. So be careful inspecting any that you happen to look at. The last year El Caminos were made was 1987 and there are still plenty on the road. That is a testament to their build quality. But unfortunately 70’s and 80’s GM cars had poor rust protection, so many driven in the north have deteriorated over the years. If you don’t drive ‘em in salt and snow, the body will last with no problem.

But always expect to have a couple things go wrong, even with a good example. They are old cars, so occasionally need things replaced. But fortunately with older cars like El Caminos, they are simpler and easier to work on yourself! Plus parts for old GM cars are very cheap compared to newer car parts. So if you do the work yourself, you’ll save a lot of $$$.

El Caminos are pretty neat cars though, and something unique among all the boring new cars. You can get G-body El Caminos for good prices nowadays (1978-1987). The 1973-1977 models usually aren’t that expensive either. My advice is to get one with either a 305 or 350 V8. The 4.3 V6 is a fine motor but only will get 2mpg better than a 305 or 350 V8.

Q: When you see a man driving a 1985 Chevrolet El Camino, do you automatically assume he beats his wife?

A: Yes.
And by yes, I mean no.
And by no, I mean I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Q: Solenoid /starter Wiring. 1982 el Camino Chevrolet?
Does anyone know the wiring for solenoid /starter wiring for 1982 el Camino Chevrolet
Maybe a diagram? I know it has 3 cables that were once all together but I think that is wrong and could be harmful.
Please help

A: the three wires that were on the battery terminal are okay.on e goes to the battery positive, the second will connect to the alternator output term(the big one)and the third will connect to a junction block on the fire wall
the solenoid wire is purple. it may not have power until in park or neutral(auto trans) or the clutch is depressed(manual trans). Good luck, take your time,it will work, especially if you re connect the ground cable. This wiring has been used on all GM cars for years, the color codes are the same.

Q: Does anybody know of a show or organization that might be able to rebuild my dads 1980 Chevrolet El Camino?

A: Why not ask what you really mean. Can your father’s El Camino be restored at someone else’s expense, rather than you or your father paying for it.

If you want something, you should work hard, save your money and pay for what you want. Rather than begging, earn your own way.

The best helping hand is located at the end of your own arm

Q: How much do you think I could get for a Chevrolet 1979 El Camino in perfect condition?
I need to know how much I could get for it?

A: In VA, and in perfect condition, I’d say around $6000-$8000. If it is a 4-speed then the higher but more than likely you won’t get more than $5000 for it. If you want to make some money on it then hold on a few more years. They’re getting more and more popular again. I saw a couple average one’s for sale today for around $3000 on craigslist.

Q: does a 1979 chevrolet el camino have lead paint on it?
i sanded the paint off without a mask and i hope i dont have lead poisoning.. i have been getting headaches and body aches..

A: ACRYLICS WERE USED ON THAT CAR BUT NOT CLEAR COATING. SORRY ABOUT YOUR HEADACHES. COOL 1979 MINCHE

Q: Does the Chevrolet El Camino have high insurance?

A: we’re talking old cars. love to find one in good shape… insurance should be low considering it’s probably classified as a pick up….

Q: How can I keep mice from making my El Camino their home?
I have an old Chevrolet El Camino that does not get driven very much. Mice have made their home under the dashboard. I have trapped 2 of them, but more will move in Is there something that will keep them out?

A: Peppermint Oil. Take a cotton pad, or cotton balls and soak them in Peppermint Oil and put them in the car, under the dash where you can reach, or set them in a small tuna can or something on the floor. It will keep mice and rats out, and unlike other things such as mothballs which do it also, it will not smell bad like the mothballs. Change your cotton balls every so often so that it maintains the smell in there. I have lived in the country for over 35 years and we have mice and pack rats, and they love to chew on the electrical wires under the dash board. This will keep them out. I do it in my Mobile Home Also.
I have a ‘66 and an ‘83 El Camino, and it works on them. I very seldom drive them, usually drive one of my other cars. Single and Car Poor. 5 vehicles. LOL You can get Peppermint Oil in some drugstores, but it is cheaper to look it up on the Internet and order it there in a larger bottle.

Q: Chevrolet El Camino!?!?!?!?!?
Was the Chevrolet El Camino(Also known as the Chevy Conquistador, and GMC Sprint/Cabellero) known as a muscle car? It came as an SS variant which was only offered by Chevrolet on muscle cars.
Well, as it also being a truck, i wouldn’t have thought at first it being a muscle. I have always thought of it as a muscle car/truck because of the intense power that it had came with.

A: It seems to me that it may be considered a muscle car or truck…I wouldn,t say it,s a collector type vehicle though…I watch many collector car auctions and i think I,ve seen maybe 3 in the last 7 years…This may change though…I wouldn,t buy one as an investment but I would buy one to make a drag car out of….

Q: I’m gonna fix a chevrolet El Camino how much money will I need?
im gonna buy a car from the junk yard how much money do you think I’ll need to build from scratch

A: 20 grand to do it right

Q: 69′ Chevrolet el camino?
does anybody know if i can go buy a whole engine for 69′ chevrolet el camino brand new like everything that goes under the hood

A: No you can’t buy one package with EVERYTHING under the hood.

Yes you can buy new SBC v8 engines, No you can’t buy a new stock engine for that car

Look at a GM goodwrench 350 crate engine, or GM performance parts crate engines.

You will still need a rad, hoses, brake booster, fan, shroud, wires, brake lines, fuel lines, etc etc for everything under the hood

For parts look at

Q: Could GM change the truck they use in the Craftsman Truck Series if they choose to bring this beast back?
http://www.pickuptruck.com/html/2011/chevrolet/elcamino/elcaminohans.html

http://www.leftlanenews.com/el-camino-to-return.html

I don’t believe it, but the more I look into it, the more I think it’s going to happen. The El Camino could be making its return to the GM line in the United States for sale as soon as 2009, or as late as 2011.

Is this just a creative way to lose money? or do you think GM will have success in bringin’ back the El Camino?

I have always loved El Caminos.. they had there distinct uglier models as well, but I still ALWAYS wanted one as a kid growing up. (I also had the notion I’d have a Harley Davidson to put in the back lol)…. Anyways, Just wanted everyone elses input on if they think this venture would sink or swim for GM?

AND… If it did happen, could GM use the El Camino in the Craftsman Truck Series? It’s considered a truck… I think

A: Unfortunately, every sanctioning body I have dealt with has considered Elkies, and Rancheros as neither cars nor pick-ups. That really sucks, because I thought I had a really good way to “cheat” with my aerodynamics, making the bed of a Ranchero nothing more than a giant wing.

BTW, that’s not a bad looking vehicle, but I’m still partial to Ford’s Falcon Ute down under!!!

Q: Chevrolet Monte Carlo production to end in June?
General Motors has confirmed production of its Monte Carlo coupe will end early this summer. The last orders will be taken in early May, and assembly at Canada’s Oshawa plant will stop on June 20th.

Thanks to a model update and new V8 engine, sales of the front-wheel-drive Monte Carlo were up slightly in 2006, but fell significantly early this year (down 60 percent in January). GM expects the 2008 Malibu to cut into potential Monte Carlo sales further, making now a good time to axe the coupe.

While GM hasn’t commented on the future of the nameplate, product chief Bob Lutz said in March GM’s new rear-wheel-drive Zeta platform would be used for a new Monte Carlo, along with the upcoming Camaro, Impala, GTO, and Buick Statesman (now believed to be on hold). At the time, Lutz also said a new El Camino was possible — a proposal that is gaining steam, according to recent reports.

http://www.leftlanenews.com/chevrolet-monte-carlo-production-to-end.html

A: they are just stopping production so they can change over the plant from the w-body to the new zeta platform. the large coupe will be built off that platform once everything is back up and running.
the new platform is rwd again also.

Q: Opinion and Questions on ‘77 El Camino?
Looking to buy a 1977 Chevrolet El Camino SS on sale by a local guy. It has the 350 engine with 4 barrel carb, and automatic transmission. Its in fair condition with a few spots of rust and in need of a new interior. What do you think of the car in general, and what would be a rough price range for something like this? Any help would be appriciated.

P.S. does anybody know what model transmission one of these would have?

A: Click on the link below for a price. Tranny would be TH 350. Very common for the time. It’s a cool vehicle, but not that interesting or collectible. That era of cars were so choked with emission controls, they just barely made enough HP to get out their own way.

Q: What is required to register a vehicle in Canada that is from U.S.A. and 25 years old?
I live in Alberta and I found a 1983 Chevrolet El Camino for sale, the owner drove it to Canada, but never got it registered. So what do I need to do to register this vehicle in Alberta.
I was told he has a vehicle import form from transport Canada, and he gave me the number of the form.

A: Ask if he established ownership in Canada. If not, the import documents were never filed. He would need to give you the K-22, or whatever equivalent form was issued at the border at the time he crossed, as well as a bill of sale, and the US title. Otherwise, the vehicle is actually in Canada illegally, and attempting to register it may get it ordered out of Canada. If he was living in any province besides Alberta at the time he drove it up, there may be sales tax owing on the value at the time of import. If he has a Canadian ownership document, then it means he did turn the paperwork in properly, and you can take the ownership document and bill of sale and get it registered.
Check it out carefully.
As far as the other answer from Manitoba goes, it is WRONG! I am a licenced insurance broker, vehicle registrations agent, and driver licence issuer in Manitoba, and have handled imported vehicles.

Q: Im looking to buy a reliable masculine vehicle. Any suggestions?
I thought of these vehicles. I dont want to spend more than $4,000.
International Scout
Chevrolet El Camino – May be a little redneck
Ford Crown Victoria
Chevy Caprice Classic
an Oldsmobile( 98 or 88)
a Buick LeSabre
The Jeep CJ series (Post-Eighties)
Any sports car( Nissan 350Z, Camaro, Mustang, Charger, Roadrunner,
Firebird, Trans Am)
Any truck (F150,F250, F350, Dodge, Chevy Blazer)
Cadillac

Do you guys know of any inexpensive, reliable, masculine cars?

A: No body was cooler than…..
1. Burt “Bandit” Reynolds in than Black TA, w/ gold eagle on the hood in Smokey and the Bandit
2. Steve “Frank Bullitt” McQueen chasing the black Charger in San Fran, driving that dark green Mustang (cobra?) in BULLITT.

3. Johnny Depp playing Hunter S thompson(RIP) in “fear and loathing in las vegas” driving the red shark through the desert with a suitcase full of pharmacy….I think it was a 2 door convertible Chevy caprice.

Q: Do not listen to the government. Toyota recall is a hoax! Why?
I will tell you why:
It’s because the government owns GM now. They want you to buy
our vehicles. Why are people freaking out about Toyota? Of the ten
largest auto recalls of all time eight were GM vehicles. They’re trying
to scare you into purchasing GMs. Think about all of the commercials
they’re pushing. Hear one on the radio the other day “I JUST TRADED
IN MY TOYOTA FOR A CHEVY MALIBU, I FEEL SO SAFE!!!”

No. No. No. No. You couldn’t pay me to drive an American vehicle.

Ford 1987 (3.6 million vehicles): Engine-compartment fires caused
by faulty fuel-line connectors compelled Ford to issue this recall in
1987. While not the biggest in terms of vehicle numbers, this recall
may be the widest: affected vehicles included virtually every model
Ford made, including F150-350 trucks, and all Lincoln and Mercury models.

GM 2004 (3.6 million vehicles): From 1999 to 2004, tailgating took on
a new dimension for the 134 customers who suffered minor accidents from
collapsing tailgates. Corroded cables were the culprits. In 2004, GM offered
to replace the tailgate cables on Silverados, Sierras, Escalades, and Avalanches.
In their defense, it should be noted that customers are clearly warned not to
stand on open tailgates. At least 134 have not read that part of the owner’s manual.

GM 1973 (3.7 million vehicles): The ability to control where your car actually
goes is important. GM saw the truth of this in 1973 when they agreed to install
engine shields to prevent stones from disabling the steering assembly. 18 models
were affected: Centurion, Electra, Estate Wagon, LeSabre, Riviera, Belair,
Biscayne, Brookwood, Caprice, Impala, Kingswood, Kingswood Estate,
Townsmen, Olds 88 and 98, Bonneville, Grand Ville, and Catalina.

Ford 1971 (4.1 million vehicles): Seatbelt shoulder harnesses on 1970 and
‘71 Ford Rancheros, Lincolns, Mercurys, and Fords (yes, there was at one time
a Ford Ford) had an annoying tendency to fray and detach from the metal holding
it to the frame. And though few drivers were even wearing seatbelts back then,
Ford did the right thing and issued the recall.

GM 1981 (5.8 million vehicles): Some drivers learned the hard way that suspension
bolts in certain GM models had a way of wiggling themselves loose. The result? The
loss of ability to steer the car. In 1981, GM offered to replace the dubious bolts in the
Century, Regal, El Camino, Malibu, Monte Carlo, Caballero, Cutlass, Grand Prix, and
Lemans.

GM 1971 (6.7 million vehicles): In 1971, some GM customers got the ride of
their lives as engine mounts began separating from frames and falling back onto
throttles. The models with these rocket-like tendencies included Belair, Brookwood,
Camaro, Caprice, Chevrolet, Chevy II, G Series, Impala, Kingswood, Nova, P Series,
C Series, and Townsmen.

Ford 1996 (8.6 million vehicles):In 1996, after customers complained of fires caused
by faulty ignition systems, Ford Motor Co. recalled vehicles including 1998-’93 Escorts,
Mustangs, Tempos, Thunderbirds, Cougars, Crown Vics, Grand Marquis, Lincoln Town
Cars, Aerostars, Broncos, and F-series trucks

Ford 2008 (12 million vehicles) In February of 2008, Ford issued the industry’s
largest-ever recall, affecting Lincoln and Mercury SUVs, pickups, cars, and vans of
model years ‘93 to ‘04. The lowly cruise-control switch was behind this mother-of-all
do-overs. It had a nasty habit of catching fire, sometimes hours after the vehicle had
been parked and turned off. Owner response, however, has been slow, so in a rare
move Ford reissued the recall in September of 2008 for the 5 million vehicles still
unrepaired.

On top of ALL of this I bet none of you have heard of the 1.3 million Chevys just
recalled in China for failing steering wheels just YESTERDAY.

Thanks, but I’m going to be sticking to my imports.

A: You are probably right
My original thought was “since when is the federal govt involved in car recalls”
All of the auto makers have had recalls and the feds don’t get involved like they have on this one.
Our whole political system is a mess & full of corruption.

Q: 1972 Chevrolet El Camino SS?
what would be the value of a 1972 El Camino SS?
-great condition on the outside: rust only under door handles but minimal.
-good condition for the interior: vinyl seats are a bit worn.
-good condition engine: unsure of transmission and mileage.
-all original parts
-heat/cooling
-brown paint with double tan racing stripes down the middle.

an estimate, or a place to find one would be great.

A: LOOK IN A HEMMINGS CAR BOOK,OR THE ANTIQUE AUTO CLUB OF AMERICA, IN CARLISE, PA. THERE ON THE WEB

1970-1971 Dodge Challenger
1968-1970 Chevrolet Corvette
1977-1980 Pontiac Trans Am
1966-1968 Cadillac Sedan DeVille

I know they’re all old, but I like old cars. And I know some people will say “The car doesn’t matter as long as you’re an okay person.” I just want to know (out of curiosity) which of those cars will impress a girl.
I forgot to add like 7 more cars. Here are the other 7:
1968-1969 Dodge Coronet Super Bee
1967-1968 Ford Shelby Mustang
1968-1970 Plymouth Belvedere
1964-1966 Ford Mustang
1971-1978 Ford LTD
1969-1972 Oldmobile Vista Cruiser
1968-1970 Plymouth Roadrunner
I put the Vista Cruiser in my list because I want to see what people will say. Plus, it was in “That 70’s Show” and all of Eric’s friends were impressed by it.
There’s actually 1 more car. It is:
1969-1970 Pontiac GTO

A: vette, camaro or mustang
